I always liked how George Lucas used real languages for his alien races. Taking a page from his playbook, I used Indonesian for the shopkeeper’s native tongue. The sign on the shop, btw, more or less reads “Mechanical Man” as in robots. Unless Google Translate is lying to me again…
Google translate is lying again. Well, not technically… “laki” in indonesian means “male”, so it’s a valid translation of “man”, but in this context sounds weird. Better might be “orang mekanis” – mechanical person.
D’oh! Why have you forsaken me, Google?? Actually, I was concerned about that too, specifically whether the context would fit. Can you tell me if the rest of the conversation in Indonesian sounds okay? 🙂
Nice touch, it allows everyone to speak english but without the plot hole.
Thanks!
